taylor swift’s midnights & the best new releases in music. oct. 2022

Becoming a Taylor Swift fan is almost like a rite of passage for teen girls. However, being a Swiftie can be exhausting. Taylor is known for her cryptic messages hinting at new music, release dates, etc. She also constantly uses “easter eggs” in music videos, social media posts, and other content to give clues to what she has up her sleeve.

She recently dropped her 10th original studio album titled Midnights. The album hasn’t gone unstoppable though. There has been a lot of competition with other new music. 2022, especially October, has seen amazing new music releases. Every genre has gotten something new, and there’s been drops from recently viral artists like Noah Kahan as well as old favorites like a-ha.

Three albums this month have stuck out as my favorites, as well as favorites among a lot young adults. Midnights from Taylor Swift (obviously), Stick Season from Noah Kahan, and The Greatest Thing I’ll Never Learn from Dylan. A few honorable mentions are People in Motion from Dayglow, Acts III & IV from Young the Giant, and Being Funny in a Foreign Language from The 1975.

Taylor Swift - Midnights

A long awaited album, Midnights didn’t disappoint. At first listen, I didn’t love it. Based on popular Tweets and TikToks, a lot of people didn’t love it immediately either. I said this is the sushi of my music taste. I didn't like it at first but now it’s easily at the top of my list.

A few fan favorite songs are "Anti-Hero," "Lavender Haze," "Midnight Rain," and "You’re On Your Own, Kid." Taylor also threw us a curveball with the 3am Edition songs. "Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve" seems to be a popular choice from those songs. A few of my current favorite songs from the album are "Bejeweled," "Karma," and "Question…?" As far as the 3am Edition songs go, "The Great War" easily tops my list.

In total, Taylor released 23 songs. 13 on the original album, 7 3am Edition songs, and 3 Target exclusive songs. "Hits Different" from the Target Tracks quite literally hits different and might actually be my favorite song from her releases, or at least top 3.

Noah Kahan - Stick Season

Noah Kahan recently went viral on TikTok, where his single "Stick Season" gained a lot of attention. It took over the For You Page with both videos using his sound as well as covers of the song. A little bit after his TikTok storm, his song "Northern Attitude" started snowballing into a trend as well, but nowhere near as big as its predecessor.

The fan favorites from this album are "Stick Season" and "Northern Attitude," as expected, as well as "All My Love" and "Growing Sideways." My personal favorites are "Everywhere, Everything" and "New Perspective." Noah has a unique sound that makes it on my “top of the mountain” playlist. As an aspiring granola girl, this is a must-listen for me.

Dylan - The Greatest Thing I’ll Never Learn

Dylan is an up and coming pop icon. She also had a brief moment of popularity on TikTok with her song "You’re Not Harry Styles." This is how I discovered Dylan. Since then, she’s released multiple jam-sesh worthy songs. Her newest album is no exception. She has perfect break up anthems for all the college girls that are going through it right now. She also has a way to bring back the confidence you lost to men.

Some popular songs from The Greatest Thing I’ll Never Learn are "Home Is Where The Heart Is" and "The Greatest Thing." My personal favorite is "Nothing Lasts Forever." Aside from this album, her songs "No Romeo" and "You’re Not Harry Styles" should definitely make it onto your man hater playlists. Mine is called “men have no souls.” Fitting, right?
